Not a day goes by without UV. Around the world, people get in touch with UV-printed or UV-coated products. The labelling on a shampoo bottle in the shower, the direct mail on the doorstep, the flexible packaging containing the soup and the tempting creativity of the fine chocolate box passed round after dinner. Without knowing, UV touches our lives in more ways than imagined possible and helps to create imaginative and diverse products to satisfy our needs and desires. In the graphic arts industry, UV and thermal drying systems have been specifically developed for either direct or mobile installation for all press types.
In UV sheet-fed offset printing, e.g. packagings, high value brochures, direct mail, labelling, currency paper, bank notes, credit cards, telephone cards, identity papers are manufactured. Substrates are paper, carton, metallized or foil-coated cartons, plastics such as PP, PE, PVC and PET and transparent films.
In UV rotary offset printing, e.g. forms, direct mail, cheques, lottery tickets, labels, packagings and newspapers and supplements are manufactured. Substrates are natural paper, coated paper, NCR paper, thermal paper, compounds and aluminium laminated paper.
Applications in Narrow Web are e.g. pricing and promotional labels for food products, cosmetics, medical products, chemical products, the pharmaceutical industry, promotion and jewellery, labels for the commercial sector, labels for opening and re-sealing food packagingas well as holographic labels. Substrates are paper labels, coated and uncoated papers, metallized papers, heat-sensitive papers, self-adhesive plastic labels with and without base (all popular plastics), mono-film for in-mould-, wrap-around- and shrink-sleeves labels.
Applications in wide web printing are mainly packagings. It is printed on films, foils, laminates, carton, cardboard and aluminium.
In metal decorating, metal packagings like cans or boxes, bottle tops and screw capsare manufactured. They are made of sheet steel and aluminium.
UV drying systems are also available for newspaper printing presses. The points to take into consideration when deciding to change to UV printing and the equipment which is needed to be successful is explained in the following.
